Introduction to Homeland Security/Homeland defense Planning Course
Welcome! Thank you for your interest in the Introduction to Homeland Security/Homeland Defense Planning Course.
Purpose:
The purpose of this course is to introduce new and upcoming planners and leaders in homeland security to planning doctrine, methods, and techniques. This comprehensive introductory planner’s course is a key step towards:
- Introducing planners to thinking through the depth and breadth of homeland security demands
- Increasing interest in becoming Homeland Security planners
- Developing a planning culture throughout the Federal interagency
Course Objectives:
This three-day interagency course provides students: 1) the tools to better think through the spectrum of operations addressed by homeland security planners; 2) the understanding for the need for horizontal and vertical integration in all planning; 3) the understanding of how Department of Defense capabilities can be included in the Homeland Security planning process; and 4) an introduction to critical and creative thinking in order to develop innovative, affordable, and flexible solutions to challenges.
Students will also be able to reinforce key planning concepts required in planning teams to include: 1) Using critical and creative analysis and thinking techniques tappplied to National Planning Scenarios: 2) Working through practical exercises of key planning activities, and 3) Reviewing Case Studies to examine Recovery Operations from both a Federal and State perspective. In addition, students will acquire the baseline knowlege for attending other Interagency planning courses.
Course Format:
The Introduction to Homeland Security/Homeland Defense Planning Course is conducted in a seminar format, primarily using facilitated discussions, designed to introduce the broad range of Homeland Security challenges and requirements for planners.
Who Should Attend? (this course is underwritten by Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Americas' Security Affairs and there are no registration fees).
- DHS, DoD, and other interagency personnel interested in learning about the fundamentals of planning.
- Personnel who support homeland security planning.
- Current and future homeland security planners and leaders.

- Additionally, students are encouraged to complete the baseline EMI courses for NIMS at http://training.fema.gov/IS/NIMS.asp Specifically, IS-100.b; IS-700.a: IS-200.b; and IS-800.b

Directions to Shirlington Gateway Building
Driving Direction from the North Take I-395 South to Exit #7. On the exit ramp, follow the signs to Shirlington. Take the exit lane to the right as you approach the Shirlington Gateway Building. Stay in the left lane as you approach the traffic signal at the end of the exit. At the traffic signal, make a left hand “U” turn (180 degrees) into the building entrance driveway.
Driving Directions from the South Take I-395 North to Exit #6. On the exit ramp, follow the signs to Shirlington. Exit ramp crosses over I-395. Stay to the right onto Shirlington Road and the Shirlington Gateway building will be on your right. Turn in the entrance to the building before the light. T
aking Public Transportation Use the Trip Planner feature of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority website. In the “Travel to Location,” type in 2800 Shirlington Road for step-by-step directions to Shirlington. http://www.wmata.com/rider_tools/tripplanner/tripplanner_form_solo.cfm Parking Free parking is available in the 2-level parking garage. You may park in any of the non-assigned spaces. Enter the building and take the elevator to the 11th floor.

Hilton Garden Inn. This hotel is within a short walk to our building and also to many restaurants.
